FIT and MicroFIT programs (Ontario)

The Government of Ontario offers subsidies for the installation of renewable energy systems through the Feed-In-Tariff program. The Independent Energy System Operator (IESO), an organization responsible to regulate the electricity market in Ontario, offers a guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production.

The Feed-In-Tariff program is divided in two: MicroFIT and FIT. The FIT program is intended for project over 10kW and under 500kW. The MicroFIT offers similar subsidies for projects smaller than 10kW, mainly homeowners and small businesses.

Under these programs, you are paid a fixed price per kWh for the energy generated by your solar system over a period of 20 years. This guarantees a consistent cash flow during the full life of your system.

Under the Feed-In-Tariff program, the IESO pays customers for the energy produced by their renewable energy system. The 2015 FIT and micro FIT price schedule is shown below.

As a reference, with the high efficiency components manufactured in 2015, a typical 9kW rooftop solar system can generate approximately 10,000 kWh of electricity per year. Of course, this value depends on roof orientation and near shading elements.
